Places of Interest

Cabra Castle is the ideal base from which to explore many neighbouring places of interest.

Nearby, Lough an Leagh Mountain is located between the towns of Bailieborough and Kingscourt. It offers 7km of walking trails and a picnic area, set against spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. On a clear day, up to 14 counties can be seen from the summit.

The World Heritage Site of Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth is approximately 45 minutes away. These ancient temple and passage tombs are over 5,000 years old, older than Stonehenge in England and the Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. As this is such a popular tourist attraction, you should plan to get there early to avoid disappointment.

Explore the unique heritage of County Cavan at the Cavan County Museum approximately a 45 minute drive from the Castle, where you can discover fascinating artefacts dating from the Stone Age through to the 20th century, see the ancient Killycluggin Stone, uncover Cavan’s medieval past, and learn about the area’s recent history through photographs and documents in the Folklife Gallery and GAA History exhibition. Experience life on the battlefield at the World War One Trench Experience, the largest outdoor replica trench open to the public in Ireland and the UK. Stop by the Percy French Gallery to admire the works of Cavan’s greatest songwriter, Percy French. Bring the kids to the playground, enjoy a leisurely stroll on the Nun’s Walk, and relax with a hot drink at the tea rooms. No need to book in advance for your visit.

The medieval town of Carlingford is just over an hour's drive from the castle - a charming and scenic, lakeside town and heritage centre nestled below the Cooley Mountains. As well as its historic attractions, it offers an array of quality restaurants and some very attractive shops and galleries; as well as a water sports adventure centre.

Drogheda is a bigger and busier historic town, with many medieval sites of interest, as well as a bustling commercial and shopping centre for the region (approx 45 minutes away).

The Castle is just four miles from the town of Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan, home to the world-famous Carrickmacross Lace and Patrick Kavanagh Centre. This literary resource centre hosts exhibits on local history and Kavanagh. It houses a 60-seater audio visual theatre and research library. An excellent choice for book clubs and poetry devotees, the centre also runs creative writing and other workshops.
